Do I Need Dance Experience to Join a Dance Holiday?

10/09/2026

One of the most common questions we hear is: "Do I need to be a good dancer to go on a dance holiday?"
The short answer is: it depends on the holiday.
Dance holidays aren't all designed for the same level of dancer. Some are perfect for beginners who want to learn something new, while others are aimed at more experienced dancers who already have a good understanding of the style.
At Club Dance Holidays, we offer a wide variety of dance holidays, so the most important thing is choosing one that matches your current ability. And if you're unsure whether a particular holiday is right for you, we're always happy to talk it through with you before you book.
Feeling nervous about joining a dance holiday?
If you've never been on a dance holiday before, it's completely understandable to feel a little apprehensive.
You might be wondering:
  • "What if everyone else is much better than me?"
  • "Will I be able to keep up with the classes?"
  • "What if I get the steps wrong?"
  • "Will I feel embarrassed?"
  • "Do I need to bring a dance partner?"
  • "What level of experience do I actually need?"
These are all sensible questions.
The good news is that you don't need to be an amazing dancer to enjoy a dance holiday. What matters most is finding a holiday where the teaching level and style are appropriate for you.
So, do I need dance experience?
It depends on the dance holiday you choose.
Every dance style has different requirements, and even holidays within the same style can be aimed at different levels.
For example, some of our ballroom dance holidays can be enjoyed from beginner level, while other dance breaks are specifically designed for more experienced dancers.
That's why we always recommend checking the ability level before booking — rather than assuming that every dance holiday is suitable for every dancer.
Ballroom holidays: beginners can join
Ballroom is a great example of a dance style where you don't necessarily need years of experience before joining a dance holiday.
Our ballroom holidays can be suitable for beginners, depending on the specific holiday. Ballroom dances such as the Waltz and Quickstep have basic patterns that beginners can learn relatively quickly, while more experienced dancers can use the holiday to develop their technique, styling and repertoire.
However, we do recommend having some previous experience if possible.
Why?
Because having attended a few classes before your holiday can make the experience much more enjoyable. You'll already have an understanding of basic timing, dance positions and how a class works, meaning you can concentrate more on learning, improving and enjoying yourself.
For example, if you've had a few beginner ballroom lessons at home before travelling, you'll probably find it much easier to get involved when you arrive.
And that's really the key: you don't have to be an expert, but a little preparation can help you get more from your holiday.
Line dance holidays: experience matters
Line dancing is a little different.
For some of our line dance breaks, an intermediate level or above is recommended.
This isn't about keeping beginners out — it's about making sure that everyone on the holiday has a great experience.
Line dance choreography can move at a quicker pace, with more complicated sequences and combinations being introduced during classes. If you're completely new to line dancing, you could find yourself struggling to keep up with the group.
And that can take away from what should be a fun and relaxing holiday.
If you arrive with a reasonable level of line dance experience, you'll be much more likely to enjoy the workshops, learn new choreography and dance socially in the evenings without feeling lost.
If a particular line dance holiday states that intermediate experience is required or recommended, it's worth taking that seriously.
If you're currently a beginner, that doesn't mean you can't join us in the future. It may simply mean that another holiday — or a little more experience before travelling — would be the better choice for you.
What if I'm somewhere between beginner and intermediate?
This is one of the most common situations.
Perhaps you've been attending dance classes for a while, but you wouldn't describe yourself as an experienced dancer.
Or maybe you've learned one style but are completely new to another.
Don't worry.
Dance ability isn't always easy to put into a simple label.
Two people who both describe themselves as "intermediate" can have very different levels of experience. Someone might be confident with choreography but less confident with technique, while another dancer might have excellent technique but feel nervous when learning new routines.
That's why the holiday description is only part of the picture.
If you're unsure, talk to us before you book.
We can discuss the particular holiday, the style of dancing involved and what you can expect from the classes. We'd much rather help you find a holiday where you'll feel comfortable and confident than have you book something that isn't the right match.
You don't need to be perfect
One of the biggest misconceptions about dance holidays is that everybody will be an incredible dancer.
That's simply not the case.
People go on dance holidays for lots of different reasons. Some want intensive tuition and the opportunity to improve. Some want to learn a new dance style. Others simply love dancing, music, travel and meeting people with similar interests.
And, of course, there are plenty of dancers who are somewhere in between.
You also shouldn't worry about making mistakes.
Everyone makes mistakes when learning to dance.
You'll forget a step. You'll turn the wrong way. You'll lose the rhythm occasionally. You'll probably laugh about it afterwards.
That's part of learning.
The important thing is to choose a holiday where the teaching is appropriate for your ability so that you're challenged without constantly feeling out of your depth.
Do I need a dance partner?
This can depend on the dance style and the individual holiday too.
Some dance holidays are particularly well suited to people travelling alone, while partner-based styles such as ballroom and Latin can have additional considerations.
For example, some of our ballroom holidays cater for singles in classes, with arrangements made around dance levels where appropriate.
So don't assume that travelling alone means you can't enjoy a dance holiday.
If you're considering travelling without a partner, just let us know when you're enquiring and we'll be happy to explain how the particular holiday works.
How can I prepare for my first dance holiday?
If you're nervous about your ability, there are a few simple things you can do before travelling.
1. Take a few local classes
If you're considering a ballroom holiday, even a handful of beginner classes before you go can make a big difference.
You'll become familiar with the basic steps and rhythms, and you'll arrive feeling more confident.
2. Check the recommended level
Always look at the experience level for the specific holiday you're considering.
A "dance holiday" isn't automatically a beginner dance holiday.
3. Be honest about your experience
When talking to us, don't worry about underselling or overselling your ability.
Tell us what you've actually done.
For example:
"I've been doing line dancing for about two years and can comfortably learn intermediate routines."
or:
"I've only been to six ballroom classes, but I'm comfortable with basic Waltz and Quickstep."
That gives us something useful to work with.
4. Don't compare yourself to everyone else
Your holiday isn't an audition.
You're there to learn, dance, relax, have fun and meet people.
The person next to you might have been dancing for twenty years. That doesn't mean you shouldn't be there.
Choosing the right dance holiday for your ability
Ultimately, the best dance holiday is one that matches your current experience and your expectations.
If you're a complete beginner, look for holidays where beginners are specifically welcomed.
If you've already got some ballroom experience, a ballroom holiday can give you the opportunity to build your confidence, learn new dances and practise what you've already learned.
If you're an intermediate or advanced line dancer, a more challenging line dance break could be exactly what you're looking for.
And if you're somewhere in between, don't try to make the decision based on a label alone.
